According to rumours coming in Italy, Chelsea is reportedly interested in signing Matthijs de Ligt, a top player for Juventus.
Even before the winter market came to a conclusion in January, the Blues were often mentioned as one of the summer teams who may compete for the defender.
After some time has passed, in the month of May, Calciomercato reports that Chelsea is again ‘thinking about the international player from the Netherlands.
The Serie A club is interested in re-signing the centre back to a new deal that will contain a release clause, but it will be far smaller than the €125 million that is included in his present agreement. The 22-year-old player’s extended agreement does not, however, ensure that he will continue to play for the Turin club.
The attention of clubs in England is now focused on the Dutchman. Concerning Chelsea, the source adds that they “have been on standby” for some time owing to the “corporate upheaval” at the west London club. This situation has existed for some time.
Despite this, Thomas Tuchel’s team should not be written off, particularly given the fact that they will need to acquire a new central defender following the conclusion of this season since Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen are both scheduled to become free agents and depart the club.
Juve is awaiting a response from the player on an extension of his contract, but the club must “lookout for the interest” from the Premier League, where Chelsea is maintaining a close eye on De Ligt.
