A few days ago, the Merseyside club Liverpool completed the signing of Benfica star player Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan international who had an amazing season with the Portuguese club last campaign would be participating in one of the major European leagues next season.
Liverpool completed the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica for a club-record fee of £85m, with the Uruguay striker signing a six-year contract. The deal is subject to a work permit and international clearance. Darwin will wear the No 27 shirt at Anfield, which was vacated by Divock Origi this summer.
The Reds were contesting for four major trophies last season (quadruple) not until Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City clinched the English Premier League title and Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League at the Stade de France stadium in Paris.
Klopp’s squad ended the 2021/2022 campaign with two domestic titles (Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup) which they all won against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea through penalty shootouts.
In the coming season, and with the arrival of a top striker who scored home and away goals in the UEFA Champions League against the Merseyside club last season, Klopp and his men will pose a threat to Manchester City’s title defense.
Last season, Darwin Nunez played 41 club games for Benfica, scored 34 goals, and provided four assists. With these stats by the Uruguayan international for Benfica in the previous season, it wouldn’t be easy for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to stay atop of the league and defend their title.
