FA Cup: What Tuchel may have to do to correct his League Cup final mistakes vs Liverpool

Chelsea will be facing Liverpool for the 4th time this season when both clubs clash at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday for the FA Cup final.

That said, it must not be forgotten that things didn’t go according to plan for Chelsea the last time both clubs met, as Liverpool walked away with the League Cup trophy leaving the Blues to rue their mistakes and missed chances.

Speaking of mistakes in that game, two came from the Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. In this article, we will be pointing them out and discussing what he could do to avoid repeating them on Saturday.

The first one has to do with the goalkeepers. Tuchel since this season has had this issue of not trusting his first-choice goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, in a penalty shootout. Therefore, he tends to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga when a penalty shootout looks inevitable in a cup match.

The problem is that it unsurprisingly backfired in the League Cup final, as Arrizabalaga coming on late in that match, knowing that the whole team was relying on him, increased the pressure of the penalty shootout for him.

That pressure got to him which was why he failed to save any spot-kick and ended up being the one that missed a spot-kick to hand Liverpool the trophy.

To ensure there is no repeat of that, Edouard Mendy should be trusted to get the team over the line. He has already proved he can do that twice this year.

One was in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in which he helped Senegal defeat Egypt in a penalty shootout. The other was in the 2022 World Cup qualification playoff in March when his national team needed a penalty shootout to beat Egypt once again to qualify.

The second mistake Tuchel made was playing Trevoh Chalobah in the right center-back position. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz used his pace to practically destroy the young English defender who quite frankly is still learning the art of defending.

It didn’t directly lead to the one goal Chelsea conceded in that match. However, it led to a few good goal-scoring chances for the Reds. The Blues had the good form of Edouard Mendy in that match to thank for keeping them in the game for the whole 90 minutes.

That said, Tuchel can avoid repeating that mistake by playing Reece James in that position as he did in the quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid.

The English right-back, who can also play in that position, has the pace and power to deal with Luis Diaz. If he could handle Vinicius Junior, there is no reason to fear he can’t be effective against the Liverpool winger.
