Benfica announced on Monday the transfer of Darwin Núñez to Liverpool. The English club will pay 75 million euros fixed plus 25 million euros in variable payments to sign the Uruguayan striker, who has had an excellent season at Estadio Da Luz with 34 goals and four assists in 41 games. The ‘Reds’ bet could not be firmer: Jürgen Klopp’s team has made a very considerable investment to renew its offensive line, which could suffer the departure of Sadio Mané during the next few weeks.
Everything is much easier in the past, but FC Barcelona had the opportunity to sign Darwin Núñez a few years ago, and they ruled him out. This is what Luis Suárez revealed a few months ago in an interview with ‘Jijantes’. The former Blaugrana striker revealed that the club asked him for his opinion on his compatriot and his answer was very clear. “Look at him, look after him, he’s very good, I see interesting things in him,” he said in 2019, when the Artigas native was playing for Almeria. “They could have paid 15-20 million for him to be my replacement and now they will go to 80, 90 or 100 million for him,” Suarez anticipated in October 2021.
The Charrúa striker, currently without a team after finishing his contract with Atlético de Madrid, also explained why Barça rejected the signing of Darwin Núñez. “I have fifteen years of experience and I know something about strikers, but they told me I was too young and that I was at Almeria,” he explained. Evidently, the high demands of Benfica after the ‘explosion’ of the Uruguayan and the delicate financial situation of Barcelona have caused that from the offices of the Camp Nou they have not even considered the possibility of resuming the interest in the young promise.
Time has proven Luis Suarez right and Darwin will make the leap to the highest competitive level at Anfield. At Liverpool, Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ awaits him and a very interesting project to fight for the most prestigious titles on the continent.
