Joe Gomez could quit Liverpool as ‘surprise’ details emerge – pundit

Joe Gomez will have been given assurances about his role at Liverpool in the 2022-23 season before signing a new five-year deal, according to Paul Robinson.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old could force an exit next summer if he isn’t happy with his game time.

Liverpool confirmed last week (7 July) that Gomez had penned a new long-term contract with the club.

Gomez made just 11 starts last season and struggled to stay fit as his long-term injury woes resurfaced.

Robinson claimed it was a “surprise” to see the former Charlton man commit to Liverpool considering his lack of minutes.

He told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs: “From his point of view, I’m surprised to see him sign.

“I’m surprised he didn’t want to leave and become that main centre-half just like Van Dijk is at Liverpool.

“But on the other hand, he’s obviously been assured of game time and was happy with the role that was proposed.

“Within these five years there are still options to go out on loan and options to leave.

“It just gives the club that security with their asset and gives Liverpool four top-class centre-backs to lean on for this season.

“The situation could well change again next summer if he’s not playing as much as he wanted.

“The onus is now on him to show what he’s got now if he wants to get back into the England squad and become the partner for Van Dijk.”

Gomez had been linked with moves to Newcastle, Aston Villa and Roma prior to signing his new long-term deal.

The versatile defender played from the start on Tuesday (12 July) as Liverpool suffered a 4-0 pre-season loss against Man United in Thailand.
