Jurgen Klopp says ‘top class’ Liverpool player has now suffered a ‘very disappointing’ blow

Jurgen Klopp has delivered an injury update on the fitness of his Liverpool squad after their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

As per the Athletic, Klopp confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered a hamstring injury in their first pre-season victory of the summer.

Klopp also spoke about first choice goalkeeper Alisson, with one eye on the Community Shield showdown with Manchester City at Wembley.

There was also news about Diogo Jota, who will hope to help Klopp fill the void left by Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich.

Klopp offers injury update

“It’s very disappointing for him and for us. Ox had trained all the time really well and had looked really good,” said Klopp of the midfielder’s hamstring injury.

“It has happened in the past with Ox when he has had intense periods. This is just a muscle thing and we’ve had worse situations.

“I don’t know exactly how long it will take. But he’ll come back and it will be all fine. He’s a top class player who can help us.”

About the Community Shield, he added: “Ali has a chance for the game against City, Diogo not. With Ali, it’s nothing serious but we’re preparing for the whole season. It’s just not ideal.

“He can’t do goalie training with it and shouldn’t play in this moment, but he can still do some other things. These things happen. Only a little thing but we have to be careful.”

Pre-season is so important for every player but especially the likes of Chamberlain, who have struggled badly with injuries in recent seasons.

The Englishman needed to show Klopp he could be relied upon in midfield, which is an area of the pitch Liverpool could do with more goals from.

But this setback has come at a bad time, and Klopp has tried to underline his faith in the player who has just one year remaining on his Reds contract.
