It would be “embarrassing” if Frenkie de Jong decides to join Chelsea over Man United.
That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ transfer struggles.
As per The Athletic (3 August), Chelsea are holding talks with Barcelona over a potential move for De Jong.
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to Man United this summer but the move has hit the rocks due to his reluctance to swap Barcelona for Old Trafford.
Chelsea continue to spend after their recent takeover with Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella already through the door.
Kenny insists it would be embarrassing if Man United don’t get this deal done.
“Man United have spent all summer trying to get this deal over the line,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Whether De Jong wants to go or not it’s this story and that story and then something about wages. Does he want to go at all?
“It’s embarrassing for Man United. They have spent all of this time trying to get this player and he has just pushed them aside if he does go to Chelsea.
“You can’t fault the lad, Chelsea have new owners and are looking to build. They have Champions League football and that is key for players.
“I can understand why you would choose Chelsea over Man United.”
De Jong made 45 appearances for the La Liga club across all competitions last season.
During those outings, he scored four goals and provided five assists.
