Noel Whelan has urged fans and pundits to give Darwin Nunez a full season at Liverpool before criticising the hitman’s record move to Anfield.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old will take time to adapt to the rigours of English football ahead of the Community Shield next week (30 July).

Nunez came under scrutiny for his cameo performances against Man United and Crystal Palace in pre-season games, but silenced his doubters with a four-goal haul in the 5-0 win over RB Leipzig on Thursday (21 July).

Speaking to club media (14 July), Jurgen Klopp has insisted he is “not worried at all” about the club-record arrival.

Nunez, who scored 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica last term, joined Liverpool in a reported £85million deal last month – signing a six-year deal at Anfield.

Whelan suggested the price tag means the Uruguay international will be a prime target for criticism.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a lot of money, and with that money there will be criticism and speculation.

“He won’t be the first person that has happened to – it’s happened at every club over the years.

“It takes time to adapt. He’s come from a different country, and there’s a big price on his head.

“The season hasn’t even started yet – at least give him a season before judging whether it has been a poor season.

“I’m glad he’s come to England, he’s supposedly one of the world’s best strikers and I’m excited to see how he gets on.

“Give him time, give him a season – and then we can start handing out the criticism, if it’s warranted.”
