Frank McAvennie has insisted Liverpool don’t need another winger and should instead look to strengthen in midfield.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker suggested Jurgen Klopp has enough wingers at his disposal ahead of next season.
On Tuesday (19 July), sources told this site that Liverpool have made an approach to sign Ajax star Antony, 22.
The Dutch club are said to value the Brazilian winger at the £59million mark after he helped the side to consecutive Eredivisie triumphs.
Antony has three years left on his contract with Ajax.
Man United have also been strongly linked with the forward but are said to be unwilling to meet the asking price.
When asked if he thought Jurgen Klopp’s side should be looking to sign another winger, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No.
“I think Diaz came in last year and he was great. You heard Klopp talking about him before he even played saying his enthusiasm was great and he’s always wanting the ball. That’s what you need at big clubs like that.
“Do I think they need a winger? No. They need to try and get legs in midfield because [Jordan] Henderson, [James] Milner, they’re not going to be around for that much longer.
“Wingers I don’t know, midfield players yes.”
Antony made 32 appearances for Ajax across all competitions last season.
During that time he scored 12 goals and provided ten assists.
