Man Utd can agree deal for Portuguese star for ‘very close’ to £39m

Goncalo Inacio is available for Manchester United to sign with a bid “quite close” to the buy-out clause, according to Portuguese publication Jornal de Noticias (today’s edition, page 40).

Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona is the Red Devils’ top transfer priority right now, but manager Erik ten Hag might also seek to strengthen a few other positions in time for the upcoming season.

One of the goals is to be a new central defender, and United has once more been connected to Inacio, who has the same agent as Bruno Fernandes.

Although he has already received a few calls to the national squad, he is yet to make his senior Portugal debut under boss Fernando Santos.

Our opinion is that United and Sporting have an excellent working relationship because of the signings of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Marcos Rojo, and Fernandes.

As a result, they ought to have an advantage over possible competitors, and the fact that Inacio has the same agent as Fernandes might help them sign him.

When United signed the 27-year-old two years ago, they developed a close relationship with his agent, Miguel Pinho. They might have an advantage over Inacio because of his presence.

Whether they can convince Inacio to join them is the key issue. Jurrien Timber previously turned down a trade out of concern that he wouldn’t make the Netherlands World Cup roster.

With his aggressive tackling, effective line-clearing skills, and great distribution, Inacio has attracted attention. Being left-footed, he would add a new dimension to United’s attack and is also competent in the air.

He has the capacity to grow more, and working with Ten Hag might be beneficial for him considering that the Dutchman made his name by developing young players into future world-beaters.

Inacio appears to have little chance of making the World Cup team because Pepe, Ruben Dias, Jose Fonte, Domingos Duarte, Danilo Pereira, and David Carmo are chosen above him.

He might not compete in the important showpiece tournament, barring a string of injuries. It will be interesting to see if United can convince him of this in time to hire him this summer.
