Noel Whelan has warned Casemiro could struggle to adapt at Man United.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited the struggles of his former teammate Raphael Varane – who had a stop-start season in 2020-21.

According to The Athletic (18 August), Man United are close to signing Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro, 30, in a deal which could be worth €70million (£59.5million) if all clauses and conditions are met.

The report claims the Brazil star will earn a weekly wage of around £350,000-a-week for a possible five years – meaning Man United could end up paying up to £150.5million for his services.

The former Benfica star won four Champions League titles while playing alongside Varane with Los Blancos between 2013 and 2021.

However, Whelan claimed the World Cup-winning centre-back endured an “indifferent” first season at Old Trafford – and warned Casemiro could suffer a similar fate.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Look, Varane hardly set the world alight – did he?

“He came across from Real Madrid and everyone thought: ‘Wow, Varane, what a signing!’

“Has he been a great signing? So far, no.

“He’s been injured more than he’s played, his performances have been indifferent. Are we going to get that from Casemiro?

“When you’re coming from La Liga to the Premier League, it’s completely different – and a lot more demanding. The freedom you get playing for Real Madrid, you’re not going to get that playing for Man United right now.

“They’re not dominating games at all. It could be another one where the balloon is deflated quite quickly.

“He’ll bring experience and leadership – but everyone else has got to follow. One player won’t make a huge difference to a team.”
