Liverpool want Leandro Paredes but Roma have joined the race – ironically to try and replace ex-Reds midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.

Much has been made of Liverpool’s start to the season and, more specifically, the performance of their midfield.

The Reds are winless in their first three games of the campaign, drawing with Fulham and Crystal Palace before losing to Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp has to find solutions and there is no better man for the job, but whether Liverpool need to change their plans and sign a midfielder is the big talking point.

The midfield three of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott just didn’t work against United.

Henderson and Milner are both into their 30’s. So is Thiago. Fabinho is closing in on his 30’s, with his 29th birthday coming very soon.

Naby Keita is out of contract at the end of the season, Curtis Jones hasn’t kicked on as hopes and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has never lived up to his billing.

Liverpool need some serious work in midfield, and whilst they would like to wait until next summer, they may need a signing now.

A new name in the mix is Paris Saint-Germain’s Leandro Paredes.

TNT Sports in Paredes’ native Argentina report that Liverpool are interested in signing the combative midfielder before the transfer deadline.

On the one hand, Paredes can play in front of the back four or in a box-to-box role, which seems to be what Jurgen Klopp wants.

On the other, Paredes is already 28 and doesn’t exactly smack of a long-term solution, unlike a Jude Bellingham.

If Liverpool really are keen, then they now face a fight with Roma and Jose Mourinho.

Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Mourinho wants to bring Paredes to Roma as a replacement for Wijnaldum.

The former Liverpool midfielder has suffered a broken leg just days into his loan spell from PSG to Roma.

Paredes has previously impressed in Italy with Chievo, Roma and Empoli and a return to the Stadio Olympico could appeal to the midfielder branded ‘nasty’ by ex-PSG ace Fabrice Pancrate.

Roma could now go for another PSG midfielder in Paredes, and we will soon learn just how serious Liverpool’s interest is ahead of the deadline.
