Lisandro Martinez looked “dreadful” on his Man United debut and will be “bullied” by the Premier League’s elite forwards, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed United are in “big trouble” and their demise will be the “biggest talking point of the season”.
Martinez played the full 90 minutes alongside Harry Maguire as Man United lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday (7 August) in Erik ten Hag’s first game in charge.
According to sofascore, the 24-year-old won just five duels and lost possession nine times but he did complete 75 more passes – more than any other player.
His worst moment came in the second half when he appeared to push Danny Welbeck to the ground in his own penalty area.
The referee waved away Brighton’s penalty appeals and the VAR official did not feel it was a clear and obvious error so did not intervene.
“Martinez at the back, he looks dreadful,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“I know it’s only one game but he looks dreadful and looks like he’s going to get bullied physically and in the air. He doesn’t look like he’s quick.
“You’re looking at Martinez and thinking ‘Wait until you play Haaland, wait until you play Harry Kane and Son’.
“They are in big trouble Man United. It’s going to be the biggest talking point of the season, how poor they are.”
Martinez was Ajax’s player of the season under Ten Hag last season.
He moved to United for an initial £47million fee and has signed a y-year deal at Old Trafford.
