REPORT: Pundit claims ‘brilliant’ Jurgen Klopp masterstroke could net Liverpool ‘£60m’ as deal agreed

Paul Robinson has claimed Jurgen Klopp’s “great relationship” with Joe Gomez could have been the driving force behind the defender’s new five-year Liverpool extension.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old’s value will “only go up” – and the Reds could demand “£50-60million” in the coming years.

Liverpool confirmed last week (7 July) that Gomez had penned a new long-term contract with the club.

The BBC updated later that day to claim the 11-cap England international has committed his future to the Merseysiders until 2027.

Gomez, who has featured at centre-back and right-back, made just 21 appearances last season as his long-term struggles with fitness continue.

Robinson insisted the contract is a “fantastic” move for Liverpool – who can now lean on “four top-class centre-halves” in the 2022-23 campaign.

“I think he’s obviously got a great relationship with Jurgen Klopp,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Klopp has promised him that there is some kind of future there, and I think it’s a fantastic signing for Liverpool.

“They’ve secured their asset for the next five years, and they now go into this season with four top-class centre-halves.

“It’s brilliant because if he plays then they have the player they wanted, but if he only plays a bit-part role – his value will only go up. They could have a £50-60million centre-half on their hands.”

Gomez has made 142 appearances for Liverpool since joining the Anfield club from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

He played from the start on Tuesday (12 July) as the Reds suffered a 4-0 pre-season loss against Man United in Thailand.
