Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is England’s third-choice right-back at present after his defensive frailties were exposed once again.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted both Reece James and Kyle Walker will be above the 23-year-old in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.

Alexander-Arnold has been criticised for his role in both Man United goals as Liverpool were defeated 2-1 by their fierce rivals on Monday (22 August).

The right-back was also easily beaten to a header by Aleksandr Mitrovic during the season-opening draw against Fulham earlier this month (6 August).

Alexander-Arnold has made 17 appearances for England but missed last summer’s Euro 2020 tournament after suffering an injury on the eve of the competition.

Whelan urged the Liverpool academy product to “work harder” on the defensive side of his game.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Out of the three England have, I think Kyle Walker is better than any of them.

“The other two push close, but when you’re looking for someone who can defend as well as affect a game going forward – I think Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the bottom of the pile.

“Just because I think the other two have that more natural defensive ability.

“When you’ve got a team who have started slowly, these flaws tend to be shown up more easily.

“I just think when I look at James and Walker, they’re complete players.

“Defending and those flaws could be something Trent just needs to work harder at.”
