Borussia Dortmund will NOT sign Cristiano Ronaldo, insists sporting director Sebastian Kehl… despite receiving ‘outstanding click figures’ after the Man United wantaway was linked with a move to the German club.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl insisted the club would not sign the 37-year-old superstar but admitted the speculation had driven ‘outstanding click figures’ to their website.
Although Ronaldo’s arrival would likely boost digital figures even more, the Bundesliga giants clearly do not want his following to drive their transfer policy.
Ronaldo has actively pursued a route out of Old Trafford all summer, keen to play for a club in the Champions League and chase down more major trophies at the back end of his career.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was first linked with moves to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, but options have lessened dramatically since he handed in his initial transfer request.
Dortmund have become the latest club to rule themselves out of the running, although Kehl admitted the Red Devils star drove ‘outstanding click figures’.
He told BILD TV: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo will not move to Borussia Dortmund. This is so.
The click figures were probably outstanding but we have done a few things over the past days to pin down this rumour.’
Despite their lack of interest, the 42-year-old German keenly lauded Ronaldo’s talents and said: ‘He is certainly a fantastic player, a world footballer.’
Having endured a miserable start to the campaign, losing 2-1 to Brighton on the opening weekend before suffering a 4-0 thrashing by Brentford last Saturday, Manchester United and Ronaldo host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
