Jurgen Klopp has emphatically responded to claims that he could make contact with Steven Gerrard ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to Liverpool’s Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

City currently lead the title race ahead of the final weekend of the season, but just one point separates Pep Guardiola’s side and Liverpool with just one game left to play. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds host Wolves at Anfield while City face Villa at the Etihad, though Klopp denies that he will be in Gerrard’s ear before Sunday afternoon.

Following Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Southampton on Tuesday night, Klopp was asked asked if he would be discussing Villa’s trip to City with Liverpool legend Gerrard. But the German fired back with a sharp response.

Klopp said: “No, of course not. No there is no reason to talk to him. We all know Villa wants to win because Villa wants to win.”

Villa face a tight turnaround in fixtures as they host Burnley at Villa Park before they make the trip to the Etihad at the weekend. Mike Jackson’s Clarets will face Gerrard’s side on Thursday night, leaving just two days of rest for both sides before the season finale on Sunday.

Klopp has already signalled his frustration that City will play Villa after many more days of rest, and Reds midfielder Jordan Henderson is hoping for a favour from manager Gerrard. “It’s hard,” said the Reds captain on the title race.

“We have had this before when they played Brighton away and they went one goal up, and the crowd cheer and you sort of know what is going on. It’s hard to concentrate on the game and hopefully, we have that experience, we can learn from it and concentrate on what we need to.
